high seas of the world ocean. You will find explanations of key marine
protected area (MPA) terms such as critical habitat and ecosystem-based
management; excerpts from Erich Hoyt’s book Marine Protected Areas
for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises; an interactive directory and poster-map
of the more than 500 MPAs and sanctuaries for cetaceans, both proposed

global - A database of the world’s Marine Protected Areas
This project falls within the Sea Around Us Project, an activity initiated
and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, and hosted by the University
of British Columbia's Fisheries Centre. It is the result of a formal collaboration
between the Sea Around Us Project, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), United Nations
Environment Programme - World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC)
and the World Commission on Protected Areas
(IUCN-WCPA). This project has two main goals: firstly, to develop a more
robust global marine protected area (MPA) baseline than currently exists;
and secondly, to develop alternative scenarios of global MPA networks
using spatial modelling techniques.

FishBase is a relational database with information to cater to different

SeaLifeBase
A FishBase-like information system for marine organisms. It provides, for each species included, the biological information necessary to conduct biodiversity and ecosystem studies, taking advantage of lists of species already available on paper and electronically, and using the scientific names they provide as ‘hook’ to organize biodiversity information.

Around Us Project
The Sea Around Us Project is devoted to studying the impact of fisheries
on the world's marine ecosystems. To achieve this, project staff have
used a Geographic Information System to map global fisheries catches from
1950 to the present, under explicit consideration of coral reefs, seamounts,
estuaries and other critical habitats of fish, marine invertebrates, marine
mammals and other components of marine biodiversity. The data presented,
which are all freely available, are meant to support studies of global
fisheries trends and the development of sustainable, ecosystem-based fisheries
policies.

The Interdisciplinary Center for Bioacoustics and Environmental Research,
founded in 1988, is endowed with a Laboratory of Marine Bioacoustics and

protocols for the monitoring and censusing with passive acoustics, the

Darwin
A software system which allows marine scientists to maintain information for the study of various behavioral and ecological patterns of common bottlenose dolphins. The software provides a graphical user interface to access a collection of digital dorsal fin images along with textual information which describes individual animals as well as relevant sighting data. Users may query the system with the name of a specific individual or the entire collection may be sorted and viewed based upon sighting location, sighting date, or damage category. Alternatively, the researcher may query a database of previously identified dolphin dorsal fin images with an image of an unidentified dolphin's fin. Darwin responds with a rank ordered list of database fin images that most closely resemble the query image. Darwin is also available on GoogleCode.

SOCPROG is a series of MATLAB programs written by Hal Whitehead for analyzing
data on the social structure, population structure and movements of identified
individuals. The programs are designed to be easy to use, most input is
done through graphical user interfaces, and most things can be done without
any knowledge of MATLAB. The programs are designed to be flexible so you
can tailor the analyses to your data and hypotheses.

It is produced by Cornell University's Bioacoustics Research Program. Raven Pro provides a powerful, user-friendly research and teaching tool for scientists working with acoustic signals.
